Garden Group        September 21              10 a.m. Tour

Gardening is the purest of human pleasures.—Francis Bacon

Step through history with the Garden Group on September 21st as the story of the 200-year-old Oak Ridge Estate and its owners unfolds through a guided tour scheduled for 10 a.m.  To quote publicity material regarding this 4,800-acre estate in Nelson County, “Visitors are afforded the opportunity to see the pieces of a faded dream returned to its once-splendid grandeur.”  In addition to a tour of the house filled with period furniture, the grounds contain 50 outbuildings including a tea house, a railroad and telegraph station, a water tower and a Jeffersonian outbuilding which served as an office for the owner.  Garden lovers will be enchanted by the formal Italian garden, the rose garden, the Crystal Palace-style greenhouse and the cut-flower garden.  The tour lasts approximately one hour and 30 minutes after which lunch is available for those interested just five minutes away in Lovingston at Vito’s Italian Restaurant or the Lovingston Café.

Text Box: “Let’s Go”
To Shenandoah National Park	September 28

Join the “Let’s Go” group on September 28th for a wonderful outing filled with nature walks, hikes and tea at
Shenandoah National Park. This bus excursion will take participants on the beautiful, scenic Skyline Drive.
A visit will be made to the Harry Byrd Visitor Center to view the latest exhibits regarding the development of
Shenandoah and the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps. There will be time for leisurely walking or
hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing and, perhaps, a guided tour with a National Park Ranger. (This guided
tour depends upon the ranger schedule for late September which will be released sometime in August.
Examples of guided tours are a “Scavenger Hike Adventure” from Big Meadow Lodge or a tour of historic
Rapidan Camp, President Hoover’s summer retreat.)

After spending time with Mother Nature, our Newcomers Club group will have “Tea with the First Ladies” at
Big Meadow Lodge. The director of the Museum of American Presidents will present an informative
narrative on two of America’s spirited first ladies—Lou Hoover and Eleanor Roosevelt. Desserts made
using favorite recipes of America’s First Ladies and a variety of teas will be served.

The cost for this one-day bus trip is $55 per person. The price includes bus transportation, entrance fee for
the park, tea and driver’s gratuity. As always, nothing can be confirmed until there is a group quota. So
anyone interested should contact us as soon as possible.

“Let’s Go” Enjoy Christmas on the Potomac December 2010

Plans are underway for a Washington, D.C. day trip in December to tour the White House, which will be
decked out in its holiday finery, and view “Ice Experience,” presented by the Gaylord Resort at National
Harbor. In its second year and already a big hit during the Christmas holidays, “Ice Experience” features
gigantic ice sculptures exhibited in below-freezing conditions. Because of the cold, special suits are
issued to viewers of these marvelous displays carved in the holiday theme. Lunch during this outing
will be on your own.

Due to tightened security, the White House requires detailed information on anyone participating before
a tour date can be scheduled. Therefore, anyone signing up needs to have a flexible schedule
in December. The White House will confirm the tour date about three weeks prior. Then we will request
the bus and tickets for “Ice Experience” as well as contact those on our interest list with the exact date
and cost. Participants will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis as payment is received.
There will be no cancellations once payment is received. A maximum of 47 persons can be
accommodated. Newcomers Club members, spouses and guests are welcome.
The deadline to sign up is August 31.
Text Box: Join Community Outreach
At the “Day of Caring”	September 22

The Newcomers Club of Greater Charlottesville will participate in the United Way “Day of Caring” on September 22nd. This will be the third year in a row of the club’s participation. In 2009, Newcomers Club members collected over 500 bags of groceries for the Emergency Food Bank. Last year, members helped deliver food for Meals on Wheels. At the time of this issue’s printing, Community Outreach did not know what project would be assigned to the Newcomers Club, but that information will be available at the Newcomers Club Fall Coffee.
