The Newcomers Club concludes its 2012 – 2013 luncheon schedule on Tuesday, May 28th at the Omni Hotel adjacent to Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. This day’s program features Sandra L. DeKay, executive assistant at the Paramount Theater, who will speak about the history and current usage of the theater. Following lunch, she will lead those interested on a short walk along the Downtown Mall to the Paramount Theater where she will conduct a tour. Social time begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at noon.

Built in 1931 as Charlottesville’s movie palace, the Paramount Theater was a community hub until it closed in 1974 a year after a devastating fire destroyed the adjacent block. With the revival of business on the Downtown Mall beginning in the late 1980s, the return of the Paramount to its former glory seemed just a matter of time, money and will. Ms. DeKay will detail the theater’s history including avoidance of razing in favor of a parking lot to restoration and renovation in 2002. Today the Paramount again is a community hub whose mission is to provide entertainment and education for all in Central Virginia.

A life-long resident of Charlottesville, Ms. DeKay and her family made weekly outings to the Paramount and other local movie theaters. Because of those childhood experiences, she retains an abiding interest in motion picture history, particularly the silent era, and believes that Hollywood has had a profound affect on the culture and mores in the United States. Prior to joining the Paramount staff, Ms. DeKay was an archaeologist at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation and assistant director at the Albemarle County Historical Society

The cost of this luncheon is $27 per person. Reservations must be received by May 20th. Your check is your reservation. There will be no refunds after May 20th.

Complimentary parking at the Omni Hotel for the day is included. This luncheon will be in the Preston Room, which is located behind The Pointe Restaurant at the Omni. Seating is limited to 80 persons.
